Inspiring Words 2010-05-03“In Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” ~Romans 12:5 We belong to each other because we belong to Christ! This was our theme together last night at Legacy. We said these words together during our call to worship. We repeated them out loud a couple of times during our lesson from Romans 12. And we said them to one another as we shared the communion meal of our risen Lord. We belong to each other because we belong to Christ! What if that were really true? What if our congregation truly functioned not as 900 individuals but together as a whole? What if we thought in terms of the whole? What if we didn’t think about what’s best for my age group or what’s going to benefit my kids or how is this going to meet my needs? What if we thought and acted like we were all members of something so much bigger? What if the whole were really greater than the individual? What if we took the inspired apostle Paul seriously? We belong to each other because we belong to Christ! What if we were truly community? Not just community like the people in your neighborhood or the guy across the street. Not like the people you see two or three times a week and say “hello” to when you see them at Wal-Mart. What if we were a body? Like, maybe, an army platoon? Now, that’s a community! An army platoon! United by a shared purpose and goal. Working together to achieve something great. A community formed under pressure, shaped by great difficulty. Not just church membership, but a sacred covenant with one another in order to serve the Kingdom for which Christ died. A community of faith inseparably bonded in order to really do something together that eternally matters. What if we really belonged to each other because we belong to Christ? What would that look like? Peace, Allan |
